Transport Q&As
Q: How do you transport the dogs?
A: The dogs ride in our safe van separated in roomy double decker cages with comfortable pads, or on fluffy pads in the back of one of our SUVs. They relax en route to each day's destination, snoring on the way back.
When "Biscuit," a senior golden retriever, saw a white Fed Ex van zip down the street and pass his house, he thought it was Club Happy Dog forgetting him and leaving him behind. He not only dug through his yard post haste to get to this van, ignoring the electric fencing zaps, but chased the van for 5 miles including on PCH. While this astute driver had no clue why he was being favored by a Golden, he was kind enough to stop to pick up this chasing pooch and return him to the address on his tag. "Mommy" immediately increased Biscuit to 5 days a week, and we all thanked the Fed Ex driver for a very happy ending to a scary episode!
Q: What time to you pick up and drop off the dogs?
A: Pick-ups are from mid to late morning. We minimize the ride time each day by starting pick-ups with scheduled dogs who live farthest from our day's destination, working up or down Sunset with pick ups along the way until we arrive. We reverse the routing when delivering the dogs back home.
Q: Do I have to be home when you pick up my dog?
A: No. In fact even if anyone IS home, we usually get the dogs from the yard or house without disturbing any human. We safeguard alarm system and gate codes, and keep any keys in our safe when not in use. You give us home pick-up and drop-off instructions in the Enrollment. It couldn't be easier!
You are asked to be home for the first pick up so that we can meet you and make sure we understand home instructions. We also need you to give your dog(s) arms-length reassurance with the separation from you and "stranger danger," especially if not crate trained. After the first time, most dogs can't barrel to us fast enough!
Q: How long are the dogs out?
A: Usually around 3-4 hours, but from 2-4 hours each day depending on the dogs on the schedule, where we're going, and where your home falls on the route. Activity durations are long enough for thorough social play and exercise, short enough to preclude grumpy fatigue and stress. If we're bound for special field trips to the snow, beaches or lakes, we let you know in advance that this is a double-long day so you don't worry.
Q: What do I need to send?
A: Just your dog with his/her necklace (collar with tags). We use our own leashes, water & bowls, toys, etc.
Q: What do you do when it rains?
A: Whatever you tell us to do with your Enrollment. You can either have us cancel and credit that day, or take your dog out for a brisk take-care-of-business neighborhood walk from home (leave out a towel for us to dry off your dog). We won't transport dogs on slippery streets with looney LA drivers.
